"Desert O.A.S.I.S. is raising the bar for recovery, reentry, and wraparound services through the commitment to Opportunity, Accountability, Support, Independence, and Stability. It was encouraging to see representatives from law enforcement, the courts, corrections, counseling services, and so many others come together behind this important mission.As both a legislator and a registered nurse, I’ve seen firsthand the devastation addiction can bring. I have cared for individuals struggling with substance use disorders, witnessed families torn apart, and even cared for newborn babies suffering withdrawal because they became addicted to drugs in their mother’s womb. I have also seen lives lost far too soon. Those experiences have motivated me to work for much-needed change in New Mexico. We have work to do in every area —prevention, treatment, recovery, and long-term support.That is why I am so encouraged by what is taking shape through Desert Oasis. Their focus will be on helping individuals build stable independent lives. Meeting people right where they are. I was honored to surprise founder Lidia Vega with a $30,000 contribution to help make this vision a reality. When we partner to support people who are ready to rebuild their lives, hope is restored and lives can be changed."
